Why does it cost more to get a synthetic oil change than to get a regular oil change?

So, Jiffy Lube offers to change your oil for $19.99, but they don't tell you that a synthetic oil change costs $52.00. My car uses synthetic oil. I don't know what the difference is, I just know that it's better for my car.|||Synthetic oil is supposed to be a better quality oil and last longer than regular oil. They say the same thing about the sythetic transmission fluid and stuff. It's supposed to last 5 years instead of 3. I guess it's worth it if you think of it that way, but I'm no expert.|||synthetic oil is less abrasive to the car's engine. also it is more expensive do to the fact that it is more difficult to recycle and has more costly components|||Jiffy lube can buy regular oil in bulk for one quarter of the price of synthetic oil. That is the primary difference. Synthetic oil is superior to regular oil in that it does not break down under heat and stress. My Mercedes requires it because it is a high performance engine.|||Unless your came from the factory with Syn oil stay away from it. It's too pricy, and the net affect is better applied to space shuttle engines/race cars than a "normal" street car.

Read you manual, also.|||regular or should i say conventional oil costs less because that is the oil that is found in the earth. synthetic oil is man made. it is supposed to withstand the heat of the engine better than reg. oil and is not supposed to leave the sludge of reg. oil. also did you know that Mobil has come out with a synthetic oil that will last 5,000 or 7,000 or even 15,000 miles before you next oil change. if you can i would do it yourself and it would only cost you about 25-30 dollars instead if the $52.00 it costs anywhere else. hope that helps|||synthetic oil can last 5 times longer and lubricates way better then mineral oil. it's the only thing i use|||I doubt that you car can use ONLY synthetic oil. Open the operator's manual and check to see what the acceptable types of oil are.

Synthetic IS good stuff, but much more expensive. The advantage is that you can prolong the oil change interval...IF, big IF your operator's manual says it is OK to do so.|||it is because synthetic oil is about 3.00 more per quart than regular oil. they probably start out at 19,99 because it is cheap oil.|||I just found out the same thing. Tell the mechanic to explain it to you. Just as "what is the difference between sinthetic and the other..." They are there to answer wuestions for you as well as provide a service..Dont be shy to do it, plus you'll be a little car smart (er):o)
