i need to do a oil change on my 1999 Ford Focus Zetec tomorrow and i need to buy some new oil for it. apparently i should buy the correct type of oil that is suitable to my car.
what kind of/make of oil should i buy and what size of/how much of it should i buy for a oil change?
also do i need to buy anything else when doing the oil change? i think i need a filter from what i understand but what kind of/size of filter?
cheers!|||usually four cylinder cars use 4 Quarts of oil and an oil filter.
the type of your oil that has to be either 5w30 or 10w30., but you have to check your car's manual or ask a ford dealership for this info.
you will need an oil pan to dumb the old oil in it.
may be a funnel.
do you have your car's jack to lift it up?
and the proper tools to unscrew the oil pan's screw. careful not to lose that screw!.
you have got to be careful when you are replacing your oil filter.
when you twist it , make sure you twist it and not bend it. though you might brake a small gasket and it might leak later on when you put the new filter. some times the old filter are hard to unscrew.
for the filter. if you go to wall mart oil section there is a small little electronic machine that will guide you to the proper brand and size of an oil filter based on your car's make year and model.
you will find that machine in the oil section.
good luck.!|||You need oil and a filter so get them from somewhere like Halfords who will be able to tell you which you need.
Filters do not come in sizes, they come specific to the car you have.
You may also need -
a) a hexagon head ratchet drive for the sump plug
b) a filter wrench to suit what filter type it is
c) a new sump plug washer
d) a torque wrench
e) someway to safely work under the car (not on a jack)
f) something to catch and transport to the local tip about 5 litres of engine oil
By the time you have sorted all that out you may as well have paid a garage to do it for you.|||If it's petrol, you need oil for a petrol engine, should be 15/40 oil. You need 4 litres for it. Yes you will need to buy an oil filter - Just ask for an oil filter for a Ford Focus, they're all the same but look for the capacity (cc) of the engine on the box.
Castrol oil is good. Also it's good to change the air filter while you're at it. If you go to Halfords they can show you which oil and parts you need, they're very handy with advise.
Good luck!|||Look in your owner's manual under "oil". This will give you the best possible answer. Trust me, the people that engineered your car have their reputation at stake (as well as their jobs) and they have given the oil type for your car and driving conditions tremendous research and testing. Follow their recommendations.|||Your car needs 4.3 litres of 5w/30 semi or fully synthetic oil. Try Castrol Magnatec A1. You'll need a filter too. I suggest you buy a Haynes manual, which will give you detailed, illustrated instructions on how to do the job properly, and tell you what tools you'll need too. Go to any car parts supplier %26amp; they'll advise you on the correct parts.|||if you need to ask this do not change the oil yourself for what it will cost you just go to a halfords Centre and have them do it as a mistake on your part could cost you a lot and do you have the tools and knowledge to do the job????|||Two things either you can take your car to autozone where they can help you out completely or in the manual that came with the car should list the exact oil to use.|||Semi-Synthetic 5W/30 Engine Oil, from 3.75 to 4.25 litre for petrol engines.|||If you still have your hand book it will advise you what oil to use.|||JUST GO TO AUTOZONE OR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS THEY CAN SHOW YOU WHAT YOU NEED|||the fact that you are asking here says that you probably don't know enough about changing the oil to do it safely.
at the very least get a manual for the car and follow the steps in it. a haynes,Chyltins or Motors, Manual will serve you well for years from changing a light bulb to adding brake fluid.
...get a Manual and READ IT. you can do it yourself but you have to have some knowledge of the subject!
...
I detest the latest trend of going to real thin multi grade oil
don't do this if you want to keep your car alive a long time.
5w30wt Synthitic or not is great oil for sewing machines... but Not for engines unless they are being ran at -60deg F
Most car manufacturers RECOMMEND Multi-grade oil and if you change that oil every 2000 miles its safe to use... however if you go longer between oil changes than that then you should use a single weight oil like 30wt or 40wt. they hold up longer by far. where a multi-grade oil will brake down very fast. Almost ALL Multi-grade oils will burn off their heat THICKENERS within 2000 to 3000 miles depending on the engine
that leaves only very THIN oil when the engine gets hot.... not a good thing.
the idea of a Multi-grade oil is a good thing but in Practice it actually fails badly... unless you change your oil every 2000 miles stick with NORMAL OIL.... In the USA cars are Designed to DIE at the 100,000 mile mark.... using the OIL they recommend will assure that happens....
I run 40wt in all my engines except my motorcycle it gets Valvoline 20~50wt and is changed every 2000 miles. the rest I change once or twice a year... depending on the miles. My 2 current running vehicles are both Toyotas and both have over 350,000 miles and both have been running Valvoline 40wt sense the warranty expired.
Many experienced Mechanics do not follow this view they say use the recommended oil ONLY.... but I ask you, how else can they be sure your metal engine will fail at 100k miles unless they make sure you use a specific oil that is thin enough to cause a small amount of ware each time the engine is ran ?... do you really want to run a 5w30wt oil ?
that's not OIL its water ! you NEED VISCOSITY !
