I was in the car with my best friend today and she got an oil change. The guy working it emphasized a lot to not turn the engine on. I'm curious as to what would happen. What happens if you turn your car on during an oil change?
For a few seconds, probably nothing. Also depends on the engine.
1) Oil keeps metal parts from actually touching each other. This called an oil wedge. So you would cut small grooves in the cylinder wall which would let the exploding gas go out instead of pushing the piston down. Loss of power. Also it will let the bearings rub against the race so you would burn up the bearings and the crank shaft would stop. causing all sorts of problems as all the moving parts stopped immediately.
2) Oil also helps keep the engine cool. So you will also warp the heads and maybe cook the valve lifters.
3) And our very old Dodge slant six would run us home with the oil pressure at 0. it stopped at the driveway. We drained the oil and put in new and it fired up. I would not try that with those little 4 cylinder aluminum engines.
If there is no oil in it then it will burn up the engine because then there is no lubrication it is just metal on metal. And will cause major problems. What happens if you turn your car on during an oil change?
If it gets too hot your engine block will crack and you will need a whole new engine.
