It runs perfectly but is needing an oil change. I've changed oil in several cars and newer bikes but I'm not sure how to with this old bike, any ideas?

Note: I see one bolt directly under then engine, guessing that is the oil plug but I'm needing to replace the oil filter as well and do not want to take off the wrong thing. How to change oil in my 1979 Yamaha 1100 Cruiser?
You guessed correctly for the drain bolt.

The filter is in the front of the engine, just above the oil pan. Look for a large-ish finned cylindrical housing with a large bolt through the middle. Unscrew the bolt and the housing will come off. The filter is inside this housing. Make sure you don't lose the spring and pay attention to which end of the filter goes where. Check the condition of the o-ring between the housing and cranckase and replace it if necessary. How to change oil in my 1979 Yamaha 1100 Cruiser?
Also make sure you use 6 point sockets so as not to strip the head of the bolts!!!!!!practice permit testhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14759270589675151310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3895932652877942667.post-82991123001998994022012-01-19T03:50:00.004-08:002012-01-19T03:50:43.289-08:00Can you bring your own oil to an oil change place? Can you bring your own oil to an oil change place? For example when you take your car to most places they actually will not only NOT let you use your own oil they will only use the manufacted specified oil ratings or above.

Its how they make money. Tip to look into, always use the same oil, do not flush your engine every time you change your oil, best sequence is flush once with every 2 oil change. Never completely drain off your gear oil, keep an close eye on the gear oil level in between services. The other clue is the temperature indicator, if it raise faster then usual in normal condition, do take action, in high end car like this, prevention is always cheaper then cure.
i take mine in every 20,000 miles i think and let my delar do itHow often does the C-class need an oil change?
It's a function of how far you drive and how hard you push the motor. You sound like me. My car is old too. :) Don;t worry about the oil change too much. But that may depend on how cold it gets where you live. This is especially true of cars that are driven infrequently. Much depends on the climate and humidity where you live. I wouldn't panic, but if you see soapy residue on the filler cap or dipstick have the oil changed right away. Soapy or creamy stuff means water is in the oil from short run driving. There are other causes but this is the common one for cars that never get the oil hot enough to evaporate the moisture out of it.

Recommended oil changes are generally 3 months or 5000 Kilometres.Longest my car can go without oil change if I drive infrequently?
Yeesh...way too long. The guy working it emphasized a lot to not turn the engine on. I'm curious as to what would happen. What happens if you turn your car on during an oil change?
For a few seconds, probably nothing. Also depends on the engine.

1) Oil keeps metal parts from actually touching each other. This called an oil wedge. So you would cut small grooves in the cylinder wall which would let the exploding gas go out instead of pushing the piston down. Loss of power. Also it will let the bearings rub against the race so you would burn up the bearings and the crank shaft would stop. causing all sorts of problems as all the moving parts stopped immediately.

2) Oil also helps keep the engine cool. So you will also warp the heads and maybe cook the valve lifters.

3) And our very old Dodge slant six would run us home with the oil pressure at 0. it stopped at the driveway. We drained the oil and put in new and it fired up. I would not try that with those little 4 cylinder aluminum engines.
If there is no oil in it then it will burn up the engine because then there is no lubrication it is just metal on metal. And will cause major problems. What happens if you turn your car on during an oil change?
If it gets too hot your engine block will crack and you will need a whole new engine.
you will burn the engine up because there is no oil in it.What happens if you turn your car on during an oil change?
Burn up the engine.
you will really **** it up you may aswell hit it with a lump hammerpractice permit testhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14759270589675151310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3895932652877942667.post-45727242190456499342012-01-19T03:48:00.002-08:002012-01-19T03:48:28.485-08:00How much does it cost to get a standard oil change at firestone auto care?I want to get a standard oil change at firestone auto care. How often do I need an oil change? how often do I need a tune up? Is there anything else I need to be doing on a regular basis? I know nothing about cars. This is my first one.How often do I need an oil change and tune up?
Let's break it down:

OIL AND OIL FILTER CHANGE -- Your owners manual will tell you to get your oil changed at a certain interval, but they give a "one size fits all" answer. It depends on your driving habits. If you do mostly stop-and-go driving or short trips where the engine doesn't run continuously for at least 20 minutes, change your oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you do mostly highway driving or longer trips, you can get away with every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first.

TUNE-UP: You shouldn't need an honest-to-goodness tune-up until the car hits 100,000 miles. Spark plugs and wires are designed to last a lot longer nowadays, and electronic ignition systems have replaced the old distributor caps and rotors that used to wear out after a year or so.

TIRE ROTATION: Have the tires rotated every 6,000 miles or so. This will even out the treadwear. Make sure to check the air pressure in the tires every month too. There should be a sticker inside the well of the driver's door that lists the tire pressure for all four tires (usually 35 PSI).

AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT: Replace at least once a year, twice a year if you do the stop-and-go or short-trip driving a lot. A lot of people neglect air filters and they're making a big mistake. It's cheap insurance to keep your engine running.

WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADE REPLACEMENT: No time frame on this, just replace them when you notice they're not working well anymore.

FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER: It's a good idea to put a bottle of good-quality fuel injector cleaner like Valvoline fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank once or twice a year. Wait until your tank is almost empty, then put the fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank BEFORE you start filling up.

The rest of the important stuff like brakes, belts, fuel filters, etc., should be covered in the Owners Manual.
For oil changes, most recommend 3 months or 3,000 miles, but you can safely go longer. However, oil is the cheapest investment you can make. It is the number one thing you can maintain to keep your car running a long time.

The next item would be your air filter, that should be changed at least once a year, more often if you drive in dusty conditions. Air pressure is important too, you should check that every time you fill with gas. Under inflated tires waste gas and wear down more.

Most oil change places do a safety check, including the tire pressure and air filter, they will tell you when something needs to be done.

As far as tune ups, the newer cars don't really need them unless it is not running right. Spark plugs is your biggest thing, and they can last a couple years easy. How often do I need an oil change and tune up?
well here is something that i learned go in every 6 months to get a oil change and every 10 months to get a tune up. just to keep good maintance on the car. my bestfriend works for a car place where he does all that. so that is what he told me to do. so good luck
You need to change your oil every 3 mths or 3ooo miles which ever comes first. Your tune up is based on how you are driving the vehicle. Also check the fluid level transmission etc. I work for a car warranty company this what i advise people all day. When you get your tune up let them check timing belts etc. Read your manufacture guideHow often do I need an oil change and tune up?
You need an oil change? Wait, you probably meant the car... every 3months or 3,000 miles. Take it to a local shop and develop a relationship (no not that kind) with your mechanic. He'll let you know when and if you need a tuneup, or any other maintenence besides the standard lube oil and filter.

He'll also rotate your tires every 15k or thereabouts, and he'll do a major fluid flush every 60k or thereabouts.practice permit testhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14759270589675151310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3895932652877942667.post-82662529171689868612012-01-19T03:48:00.000-08:002012-01-19T03:48:08.065-08:00What do I use to get the residue of oil from my oil drain pan, after an oil change?I don't want it in the garage all sticky and oil coated from the oil change. You can benefit from a SEMI-synthetic oil. You should still change your oil at 4000 mile intervals. There is no need to spend the money for a FULL synthetic oil as your engine was really not designed to require it. Hope this helps.
many things to consider. IN a 99, you are advised to use 5w-30 wieght oil. Pennzoil should be fine. But if you have noticed that you are burning or leaking oil then you might switch to a 10w-30 weight oil, or if it is really high in miles. Synthetic oil can be used, but if you haven't ever used it before I would stay away from it. It is kind of a dependency oil once you have started with it. The reason the company is charging more for other oils is that they have the Pennzoil in a BULK tank in the back and it comes out of a hose. cheaper than the bottles. Just so you know.
You can go with the Pennzoil. It's as good a brand as you can get. What's a good rule of thumb? How often do I really need to get an oil change?
I tell my customers they're okay if they change their oil and oil filters every 3500 to 5000 miles based on which type of vehicle they drive, but the real answer is that you must follow the specifications and maintenance schedule given in your owners' manual. This is important for warranty purposes. Is it really necessary? No. Is it a good rule of thumb? Yeah. That's why that cute, little book is in your glove box.
Your owners manual should outline the specific intervals for your vehicles requirements. You might get as much a 7500 miles if you do a bunch of highway driving. Don't waste your money with the 3000 mile recommendation. If you aren't sure, just stick with the 3 months/3000 mile change interval. After the warranty is expired, you can go to whatever you like. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to go 4-5000 miles on each change but it is better for your engine to stick with the normal interval. You are using synthetic, which means you may not change your oil for 6 months or more, or up to 12,000 miles, because synthetic oil is the best there is for your car, and lasts much longer than regular oil. Yes If you can get the filter off and lose a small amount in the pan it would be good and then just fill what you lost. It might get messy tho, filter off, and immediately install the new one which will drip all over your hands till it is sealed. Good luck.I forgot to change my oil filter when changing my oil, what should I do?
just leave it, and change your oil a little sooner than 3,000 miles. if you have the extra money to go buy the oil all over again, go for it, but if your car is under 100,000 miles there really isn't much difference in changing the oil filter, and even if it is over 100,000 miles, as long as it runs strong and there wasn't any debris in the oil you just pulled from your car, it should be fine, just change your oil and your filter at around 2,500 miles instead of 3,000... but then again, my advice is to always change your oil around 2,500 miles...
Yes change the filter only , now as Alan says, but do it with a cold engine now,and rap

a plastic bag around the old filter as youtake it off, then you wont make a mess ,will make

it easy for you. When you first start up let it idle for approx 10 to 15 seconds,ok.I forgot to change my oil filter when changing my oil, what should I do?
If you customarily change the filter when you do an oil change, do it now. You may need to check oil level after running the engine a while, add oil if necessary.
Alan is right those other people are wrong that would be a waste to change your oil at 2500 miles with synthetic
Leave it on, just change the oil a little sooner next time.
Just change out the filter. You will only lose the amount of oil that is inside the filter.Add some more. The filters do not cost that much and I would change them with every oil change regardless of what someone wrote.practice permit testhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14759270589675151310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3895932652877942667.post-66215985890091996112012-01-19T03:46:00.003-08:002012-01-19T03:46:40.407-08:00Would a need for an oil change prompt a check engive light to come on?The Check Engine Light on my 2003 Chevy Cavalier has come on. Funnily enough, my boyfriend just reminded me that I haven't had an oil change in 6 months - would this cause the light to go on?Would a need for an oil change prompt a check engive light to come on?
If it was a Ford (Tarus,Tempo, or that "general style"), - yes it would mean that it needed an oil change, and the oil pickup has blocked because sludge has blocked it,-- which in turn means that probably the engine needs new bearings and pump!

However you have a Chev., -- so it means that a big hammer should be hitting you on the head (with a message attached saying "put oil in")!!! Driving without oil will put you right up there "equal with the Ford" in a hurry!

First of all you do not "gauge oil changes" by months! Some people drive 10,000 miles in 3 months, - some drive further!

This is why you have an odometer on dash, (instead of a calendar)! Also some people gauge how bad their mileage is by how often they fill it (described in weeks)!! This is "chancy" at the best!

I change my oil more or less by the amount of miles I drive! Not by how many months it was in, - I don't even change it by season (as I live in "South"), - and I don't have to worry about "thick oil" on sub-zero mornings! I just change it every 3,000- miles (approx)-- and check about once a week to see that it is not "down"on oil level! It now has 235,000 miles on it , - so I check a little more often!
